Oh, Those Hand Gestures!
I started Portuguese lessons with my original instructor and I am delighted. She is so animated. And it is funny because when I was given a new private instructor last week, I couldn't figure out what was missing. She knew her grammar. She listened a lot and corrected me well. Hmp?! What was it? And then one day when I saw my previous teacher in the hallway and she started talking to me, it all came back to me. Her haaand gestures! Yes, that was it. So, I signed up to take classes with her again this week and it makes a world of difference. I certainly agree that hand gestures are quite helpful to me when communicating, but I never took a moment to think about why this is. Communication and expression go hand-in-hand, and I imagine that allowing our bodies to participate in the process of communicating unconsciously opens new channels through which information can flow.

It's interesting to start to understand how the subtle aspects of our epxression can help us. And when we become aware of how everything is interrelated, we really get a jump start on effective communication.
