Melody Makes The Point

Using the rise and fall of my voice comes so naturally to me. I think it is for a couple of reasons: First, I communicate with emotion. Second, I like to express myself. And third, I was a trained singer and actor. The singing and acting part always seemed like the reasons behind my interest in communication skills coaching, but the more I refine my own public speaking, the more I realize it is much more about my desire to emote and express. When it comes to communication in the workplace, I've learned that you can't just speak for the sake of speaking, however. In fact, you have to be very self aware in order to get your message across in the right way and at the right time. That is where the melody of the voice comes in. Whether you state a short phrase, an in-depth explanation or a simple question, knowing the appropriate intonation pattern your voice should take, will help you emphasize key words and make your point.
